Outokumpu instituted a Total Mine Management principle of integration

Tara lead and zinc mine is located at Navan, County Meath, approximately 50km northwest of Dublin. The mine opened in 1977, was acquired by Outokumpu in 1986 and in January 2004 was transferred to New Boliden as part of an asset exchange between the two Nordic companies. Placed on care-and-maintenance in 2001 on account of high production costs, Tara was restarted in 2003 and produced 2.55Mt of ore, the highest tonnage since 1995. It is the largest zinc mine in Europe, and ranks fifth in the world. Some of the output is delivered to Boliden’s Odda and Kokkola zinc refineries, both formerly owned by Outokumpu, and the remainder goes to European customers.

sand river stone crushing

GEOLOGY AND RESERVES

The Navan orebody consists of several strata-bound, southwest-dipping, faulted lenses hosted in Lower Carboniferous limestones. Ore horizons commonly display irregular assay outlines and vary from a few metres thick to several tens of metres.

As of January 2006, reserves were 3.4Mt at 9.2% zinc and 2.0% lead proven and 12.3Mt probable with 8.5% Zn and 1.8% Pb. Measured resources totalled 1.1Mt. grading 7.1% Zn and 2.8% Pb. In addition, the Nevinstown (Bula) orebody, northwest of Tara, contains 8Mt grading 10% Zn and 2% Pb, raising the overall resource to approximately 40Mt. Boliden expects further exploration to raise ore tonnage sufficiently to guarantee a mine life of ten years.

UNDERGROUND MINING

Tara uses underground trackless mining, supported by one production and one service shaft, and an access decline from surface. The use of specifically tailored, state-of-the-art, remote-control technology and computerised systems is maximised, and the mine has developed a crusher/conveyor network to simplify handling ore obtained from a progressively larger area underground. silica sand stone crushing plant

Mining methods have varied in the past but, currently, variations of blast hole open stoping with drawpoints located in footwall ore are used and involve substantial use of remote-controlled Tamrock (now Sandvik) load-haul-dump (LHD) equipment. Pillar extraction is usually carried out using similar methods between cemented, hydraulically placed fill walls consisting of mill tailings. Tamrock 50D trucks are used for ore haulage underground with Normet utility vehicles, and New Boliden has also recently begun introducing some Atlas Copco equipment. Communications underground are provided by a Motorola mobile radio system.

"Boliden expects further exploration to raise ore tonnage sufficiently to guarantee a mine life of ten years."

Production is currently targeted from 60 stopes/pillars with a lateral development schedule of 15km/y. Approximately 1.3Mt/y of backfill are placed.

Over the last few years Tara has moved into areas of much lower average thickness (3–20m). If the ore is thick, blind upholes are used and the stope mined from the footwall drift, with inclined room-and-pillar and/or longitudinal longhole stoping used in thinner areas. sand making process

ORE PROCESSING

Four underground crushers are equipped with a hydraulic rockbreaker over a crusher pocket. One operator controls and monitors the operation of the crushers, together with the associated conveyors, the tramp metal magnet and conveyor transfer points.

On surface, run-of-mine ore is fed to the secondary and tertiary crushers, then ground by open-circuit rod milling followed by closed-circuit ball milling. The ground product passes to flotation circuits for lead recovery, followed by zinc. The flotation circuit includes 18 Outomec OK-38 and eleven OK-8 cells. Each concentrate is dewatered by thickening and subsequent vacuum filtration. The filter cakes are dried in oil-fired rotary drum dryers to reduce moisture content to levels suitable for shipment.

Since the ore at Tara is metallurgically simple, only one concentration process is needed and all process water can be recirculated. All water from the mine is pumped into settling ponds, and excess water is discharged after acidity has been neutralised with lime.

PRODUCTION

In 2005 Tara mined 2.55Mt of ore grading 8.4% zinc and 1.6% lead, and recovered 358,563t of 54.6% zinc concentrate plus 44,528t of lead concentrate grading 57.6% Pb. The contained metal tonnages were 195,843t of zinc and 26,653t of lead.

ENVIRONMENT

Outokumpu instituted a Total Mine Management principle of integration at Tara and also commenced a research programme into ‘wasteless mining’. Boliden continues to minimise adverse impacts on the environment

One of Becker’s top products is the floor-mounted

Becker Mining Systems provides complete mine-wide solutions for underground mining, including man and material haulage systems.

Trap rail systems

One of Becker’s top products is the floor-mounted, rope-driven trap rail system. This system is ideal whenever men and material have to be conveyed rapidly and safely on inclined roads. Thanks to its proven design, it does not go off the rails even when faced with gradients of 45°, single loads of 35t and travelling speeds up to 4m/s.

The rail system itself provides positive guidance of the vehicles and thus prevents a derailment of the cars. Outstanding three-dimensional curve behaviour, smooth running and perfect rope guidance are further engineering features of the Becker trap rail haulage system. pendulum feeder

Available in a rail gauge of 900mm, it is an ideal solution for all transport requirements.

Rack-and-pinion trap rail systems

For even more flexibility with rail switches of branched rail systems or easy extension or shor¬tening of the rail track (for example for face equipment relocations or in road¬header operations), the floor-mounted rack-and-pinion trap rail system shows its advantages.

Different versions are available, depending on the specific requirements: diesel-hydraulic drive and direct electric or electro-hydraulic drive (both with electric power cable). rod mill

Mine monorail systems

Available either with friction drive or rack-and-pinion drive, our mine monorail systems are powered either electro-hydraulically or diesel-hydraulically. Traction forces up to 120kN and travelling speeds up to 2m/s allow a flexible and efficient haulage of standard material and personnel in branched rail systems and roadways with up to 30° inclination.

In the case of electro-hydraulic main drive systems a power supply rail integrated into the track system of a monorail ensures an effici¬ent energy supply.

In dependence to the transportation task of the specific underground site a variety of standardised load beams and man-riding cabins provi¬de optimised and flexible train configurations for effective and profitable transport management. rotary dryer

Raise-climber system

The Becker rack-and-pinion raise climber is the mobile fulcrum of underground transport logistics. The transport of material from the loading station to the final destination must be smooth and efficient in order to be profitable.

As a unique haulage method for steep inclines up to 45°, raises, and roadheader operations, the pneumatic rack-and-pinion raise-climber with a pulling force up to 33kN has proven its outstanding performance.

For applications mainly in non-gassy mines, such as gold and ore mi¬nes, or in tunnelling sites, for example as a handling system in a tunnel¬ling machine, the electro-hydraulic rack-and-pinion raise climber shows its outstanding performance.

Pulling forces of up to 35kN allow the system to be operated efficiently and comfor¬table in inclinations up to 45°. Fail safe emergency braking with minimum wear guarantees proven safety and reliability even in extreme, complicated transport or handling operations.

Mine chairlift systems

Becker chairlift systems are ideal whenever man have to be hauled efficiently, rapidly and safely on inclined roadways. In ad¬dition to normal man-riding the chairlift system can also be used for an emergency transport of an injured person with a required special device. Two standards are available depending on the specific requirements: friction rope grips suitable for gradients less than 13° and fixed rope grips suitable for gradients more than 13°.

Turnkey man and material haulage systems for underground mining

UC Rusal and Lukoil in Oil Coke War

Russian aluminium and alumna giant UC Rusal is taking legal action against Russian energy company Lukoil, which it claims is leaving its smelters inadequately supplied.coke crusher

Rusal has alleged Lukoil has cut supplies without its consent, leaving its smelters undersupplied by about 40,000 tons of oil coke between April and June 2008.

In a written statement UC Rusal said it believes Lukoil has “significantly decreased the supply of coke to the company’s largest aluminium smelters in violation of its obligations under existing long-term contracts”.

UC Rusal is calling on the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) to take “relevant measures” to stop Lukoil from breaching article 10 of the Federal Law on Protection of Competition, to stop what it describes as its “dominant position” in the oil coke market.

This article prohibits actions of an organisation controlling a dominant share of a market which includes forcing a contractor to accept disadvantageous conditions.diatomaceous earth mill

Lukoil, however, told mining-technology.com in an exclusive interview its refinery division – which supplies the oil coke to Rusal – has had to reduce supply due to the rising cost of oil.

“We signed a contract with UC Rusal in 2006 [to deliver coke at a set price],” a Lukoil spokesperson said.

“Since then oil prices in Russia have doubled. As a result, the price for oil coke has tripled.

“In this situation, we cannot sell this product below the sales cost.

“We informed Rusal that we could not supply them at these current oil prices,” he said.

Lukoil, which is preparing its own letter to the antimonopoly committee will ask for an “analysis and examination” of its relationship with Rusal, before a court hearing on 11 September. crusher

KGHM Copper Mining and Smelting Combine, Poland

The integrated mining, smelting and refining facilities operated by KGHM Polska Miedz SA (KGHM) ranked as the world’s sixth largest refined copper supplier, and the third largest source of silver in 2005.

The KGHM Combine was created in 1961 to develop a copper deposit located north of some existing small mines in Lower Silesia, southwest Poland. Four mines were developed between 1961 and 1980. In 1971, KGHM built the Glogów I smelter-refinery, 20km north of the Legnica smelter-refinery which opened in 1959. The Glogów II flash smelter and refinery was completed in 1978.

KGHM added a precious metals plant in 1993 and sulphur treatment units in 1994 and 1998. During 2000, the firm started sinking shafts to access ore below 1,200m depth in the Glogów area. Three have been completed and SW-4 is under construction.

The average group workforce is around 27,000, with its mining and metals operations accounting for over 85% of total KGHM revenues. Employment within the company’s mining operations is around 17,900 people. dolomite ore crusher

GEOLOGY AND RESOURCES

The Legnica-Glogów copper basin extends over a polygonal area of 416km². The stratiform mineralisation occurs where Permian limestone lies against New Red Sandstone within varying combinations of sandstone, shale and dolomite. The proportions of carbonate, shale and sandstone ore types vary from mine to mine and the ore horizon ranges from 1.2m to 20m in thickness, lying at depths of between 600m and 1,200m from surface. The overall average thickness in the mineable zones is 3.38m.

Chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite are the most important minerals. KGHM is currently accessing the recently licensed Glogów Gleboki Przemyslowy deposit, which contains ore at depths of 1,100–1,400m equivalent to 26% of the resources currently being worked. As of December 2005, KGHM stated its geological resource as being 1,603Mt, containing 32.2Mt of copper and 23,003t of silver, while industrial ore reserves totalled 922Mt, containing 21.2Mt of copper and 58,496t of silver. dross crusher

MINING

The Lower Silesian deposit was developed as four mines: Lubin (1961–68), Polkowice (1962–68), Rudna (1970–74) and Sieroszowice (1976–80). Polkowice and Sieroszowice, which shared a concentrator, were merged in 1996. Shaft sinking through aquifers utilised a special freezing method. The deposit is stressed, and is subject to seismic events and rock bursts, so KGHM has developed a sophisticated monitoring system and makes extensive use of rock bolts.

Thicker seams are worked by cut-and-fill but most production relies on room-and-pillar mining on a number of levels; 950m, 1,000m, 1,050m and 1,150m at Rudna, for instance. Until the 1990s, room and pillar mining was restricted to the 2–5m-thick sections, mainly using locally built pneumatic drilling rigs.

Electro-hydraulic rigs have since increased productivity and reduced dilution in these sections, while thin-seam equipment such as the Facemaster 1.5, developed by a joint venture between KGHM and Boart Longyear and now built by Mine Master, has extended mining into thinner seams. LHDs, shuttle cars and, in thicker working areas, Toro 50D trucks, take ore to conveyors that run to the hoists.

KGHM also mines salt above the copper seam at Sieroszowice, using a roadheader. The mines traditionally worked three shifts/day for five days, with extra shifts on Saturdays as required, but during 2003 a new multi-shift system was introduced.

PROCESSING

“The average group workforce is around 27,000, with its mining and metals operations accounting for over 85% of total KGHM revenues.”

The concentrators at Lubin (23,000t/d), Polkowice (22,000t/d) and Rudna (43,500t/d) use a conventional flotation process to produce 25–26% copper concentrates for the shaft smelters at Legnica and Glogów I and the Glogów II flash smelter. Three-stage milling with rod and ball mills feeds flotation circuits. Pressure filtration yields concentrates, while tails are dewatered. There is a centralised tailings disposal system. Recovery rates in the mid-1990s were 88–90% for copper and 83–88% for silver, but have improved since. Optimising the concentrator capacity and transport to the HM Glogów smelter remain KGHM priorities, as does one station flash smelting.

PRODUCTION

Copper production increased from 400,000t/y in the early 1990s to almost 500,000t in 2001. In 2003, KGHM mined 25.83Mt of ore averaging 1.99% Cu, and processed 1.88Mt of 26.76% Cu concentrates. Electrolytic copper output was 529,616t, crude lead 20,134t, metallic silver 1,223t, doré silver 135t and gold 356kg. Other products included platinum-palladium slime, selenium and over 600,000t of sulphuric acid.

In 2004, the total output was 550,000t of copper and 1,344t of silver. During 2005, the company mined 30.4Mt of ore averaging 1.89% Cu, and this lower grade more than offset the higher tonnage produced, so copper-concentrate production fell from 2.05Mt to 1.98Mt, although the copper grade of the concentrate was increased by better recovery. Electrolytic copper production rose from 550,000t to a record 560,000t thanks to the increased use of imported charge materials in order to make optimum use of the smelter capacity. However, these materials contained relatively little silver, so that total silver output fell from 1,344t to 1,244t in 2005.

Operations at the mine were halted

The Zondereinde mine is an underground operation located in Limpopo Province, South Africa. It is adjacent to the Amandelbult mine owned by Anglo Platinum.

The mine consists of two reefs namely the Merensky reef and the UG2 reef, and is spread over 625ha with a strike length of 8km. It is 100% owned by Northam Platinum Limited. sand making production line

The mine primarily produces platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold. It has an estimated life of 18 years.

Operations at the mine were halted in July 2010 when 5,000 miners went on strike following an accident that led to two deaths. The one-and-a-half month strike resulted in a loss of R380m to the company. Operations resumed on 19 October 2010.

Reserves

The Zondereinde mine holds 9.2Moz of reserves and 30.1Moz of resources. The total proven and probable reserves at the Merensky reef are 18.43mt graded at 5.57g/t 3PGE (platinum, palladium and rhodium) +Au.

The UG2 reef contains 43.63mt of proven and probable reserves graded at 4.6g/t 3PGE+Au. The total measured, indicated and inferred resources at the Merensky and UG2 reefs are estimated to be 71.55mt and 89.14mt respectively with grades of 6.96g/t 3PGE+Au and 4.91g/t 3PGE+Au respectively.

Geology

The mine lies within the northern section of the western limb of the Bushveld sequence. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are well-developed narrow tabular ore bodies. Lateral continuity is well established across the mine lease area.

"The mine lies within the northern section of the western limb of the Bushveld sequence."

The Merensky reef includes two sub-facies including the normal reef sub-facies and the local pothole sub-facies.

The local pothole sub-facies is further segmented into three different types of reef the NP2 reef, P2 reef and the footwall P2 (FWP2) reef. Among the three reefs, the footwall P2 (FWP2) reef has been historically considered to be un-mineable. stone production plant

The UG2 reef hosted between 20m and 40m below the Merensky reef has more consistent features.

As the reef disturbances in UG2 are insignificant it is not segmented into multiple facies units. The UG2 reef comprises three layers of chromitite that are separated by a 15cm thick pyroxenite. The primary member is approximately 80cm thick while the other leading members are on an average 20cm thick.

Mining

Typical drill and blast narrow tabular reef mining techniques are used at Zondereinde underground mining. A conventional breast mining layout is implemented.

A vertical distance of 63m is maintained between the levels, resulting in a raise length of 180m due to the 200 dip of the ore body. Six panels of 30m are created for every raised connection.

Through the strike gullies that incline at 10° above strike, the ore is transported to three ore-passes handled via a dip gully. The ore-passes are attached with radial-door control chutes. Battery powered electric locomotives that pull spans of eight hoppers, transport the broken ore to the main shaft.

"The mine consists of two reefs namely the Merensky reef and the UG2 reef."

To provide access to the underground workings, a twin shaft system is placed at depths ranging from 1,294m to 2,112m. The No 1 shaft has a diameter of 8.5m and continues to 12 levels. The second 9.15m diameter shaft extends to eight levels.

The shafts are 90m apart and are connected at an intermediate pump chamber at a depth of 1,019m and also at levels 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Access below the 12th level is provided through a decline that is equipped with a conveyor belt system.

The rock handling facilities are separate for the Merensky and UG2 reefs. Mining activities are carried out using hydro-powered equipment including rock drills and high pressure waterjets along with electric scraper winches.

Processing

Processing of both Merensky and UG2 ores is carried out in separate plants designed to process sulphide ores. It involves a four-stage beneficiation process. The concentrates produced from the plants are blended in the feed tank in a slurry form.

It is then filtered and dried at the smelter. The granulated converter matte is delivered to the base metals removal (BMR) plant. In the BMR plant, the nickel and copper cathodes are separated from the high grade PGM concentrate. The final crystalline nickel sulphate and copper cathode are delivered to the local customers.

The deposit lies within the Bushveld Complex

The Mareesburg mine is located in South Africa in the Limpopo province, approximately 50km west of Lydenburg. The mine is spread over 2,129ha and is owned by Eastern Platinum (75.5%) in a joint venture with Lion’s Head Platinum (LHP). The project will be developed at a cost of $227m.

A feasibility study for the project was completed at the end of 2009. An order mining right for the project was granted by the Canadian Department of Mineral Resources in November 2010.

The Mareesburg mine will produce 115,000 6E PGM ounces annually. Development of the mine is expected to increase the annual production of Eastern Platinum to 325,000tpa. primary crusher

Reserves

The mine contains an estimated 4.5mt of probable reserves graded at 4g/t 4E. In the measured and indicated category, the mine holds 8.9mt graded at 5.26g/t 4E and 6.9mt graded at 2.19g/t 4E.

Geology

The deposit lies within the Bushveld Complex (BC), the largest repository of vanadiferous titano-magnetite, chromite and platinum group metals in the world. The BC occurs in three different limbs or lobes, known as the western, eastern and northern limb. The Marresburg deposit forms the southern part of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex.

Rocks hosted in the eastern limbs have a stratigraphic thickness of over 10km and form a saucer-shaped ellipse that extends 370km east-west and 200km north-south. An associated suite of Bushveld granitoid rocks occupies the central area of the saucer.

“The Mareesburg mine is located in South Africa in the Limpopo province.”

A large laterally continuous layer of mafic rocks known as the Rustenburg Layered Suite (RLS) forms a simple lithostratigraphic sub-unit of the BC.

Based on distinctive cumulate mineralogy, the RLS is segmented into five zones: marginal zone, lower zone, critical zone, main zone and the upper zone. PGM-enriched and chromite layers in the complex are found in the critical zone within the Merensky Reef, the UG2 Chromitite layer and the Platreef.

The three horizons account for over 85% of the world’s PGM resources and 65% of world production. Magmatic layers of the Merensky and UG2 horizons are visible for several kilometres along strike and down dip. sand making machine

The Mareesburg deposit is a down-warp of the Merensky and UG2 reefs and occurs as a detached outlier from the main outcrops of the west dipping reefs, immediately east of the Der Brochen–Booysendal Project of Angloplats. The deposit consists of the Mareesburg 8 JT farm, which is overlain by dipping rocks of the upper and lower critical zone. The farm is characterised by good outcropping. A significant east-west trending fault bisects the farm about 600m to the north of the main UG2 outcrop.

At the western outcrop edge, a minor south-west striking fault offsets the UG2. A third fault with a 10m vertical displacement extends north-south through the eastern part of the deposit. It follows the trace of a partial vertical up to a 5m-thick diabase dyke that is found in the eastern and western areas of the deposit along with a few narrow dyke fingers.

“The Mareesburg mine is located in South Africa in the Limpopo province.”

Much of the farm overlies significant chromitite layers, including the LG6, the MG1 to MG4 layers, and the UG1, a mineralised chromite layer of the UG2 sequence.

Based on the chromite content and the inter-layer distance, the UG2 sequence is divided into three mineralised chromite layers. The lowermost layer, UG2, is the main chromitite layer which is directly overlain by the well-defined UG2A, followed by the less developed UG2B.

Because the UG2A overlies the UG2, a much thicker chromitite layer (a composite reef) is formed with no pyroxenite parting developed. The composite UG2 splits at the centre of the basin into an upper UG2A and the actual lower UG2.

The UG2 chromitite horizon outcrops around the bottom of a prominent hill on the farm. The UG2 chromitite horizon and the Merensky Reef are hosted in a down-warp-shaped local structure in the critical zone.

Mining

Mareesburg will be an open pit mine. A concentrator built approximately 30km away from the mine will process the mined reef material by using standard concentrating processes. The concentrator will operate at a feed rate of 90,000tpm.

Recoveries are estimated to be in the region of 80%. A production ramp up from the mine will be rapid to allow the mill to run at peak capacity from commissioning.

Community Mining: Lessons from Canada's Ring of Fire

In April 2010, 150 hungry people sat down to a feast in a Canadian inn to discuss  how to master the mining, environment and transport challenges they face as they plan to exploit a massive chromite deposit which, if approved, will see Canada self-sufficient for a century in a vital ingredient of stainless steel.

The development, known as Canada's Ring of Fire, will also transform First Nation communities whose lives are blighted by mass unemployment and squalid living conditions.

The Ring of Fire lies under 5,120km² of wilderness centred on the James Bay Lowlands; 31,000 claim units mark out the massive deposit of chromite which would end Canada's dependence on imports of the mineral.

Examples of chromite quantity and quality are nearly 70m tons of 31.9% Cr2O3 in the Black Thor deposit and nearly 40m tons graded at roughly 40% Cr2O3 in the Big Daddy deposit. Best of all the ore can be shipped with little upgrading to steel mills.

Chairing the 150 attendees at the feast was Mike Fox, president of the Boreal Prospectors Association and co-chair of the Aboriginal Affairs Committee for the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). He explains the feast: "Our aim is to show that the players are collaborating with the community, the province and its ministry, creating an enabling environment for others in the future."

"Providing employment will be the key benefit for the prominent community involved."

Before mining can begin…

At its bluntest, those initiating the Ring of Fire face the challenges of raising finance, supplying power at every stage, building 300km of road/rail to a remote site, refining the product, disposing of unwanted material and most importantly, planning the entire project with the approval of the First Nations – the indigenous people of the area.

Providing employment will be the key benefit for the prominent community involved, Marten Falls, where unemployment is almost total, the distance to any urban centre is 400km (Thunder Bay), water quality is unacceptable and the only access is air transportation.

The same is true for the Webequie who live 150km north of Marten Falls where the 700-strong population is even more devastated.

On September 16th, 2010 the communities of Marten Falls and Webequie signed a Letter of Intent with the Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, and the Minister of Natural Resources outlining their mutual commitment to work together on initiatives related to the Ring of Fire and land use planning in the Far North of Ontario.

In Mike Fox's view, "All initiatives in the project will be subject to a planning regime but we don't know what it will be like. It will need to be defined and then approved, notably in the matter of a regional infrastructure and First Nation involvement and if one community does not want the railway...", the implication is that agreement will be needed on each aspect of the project.

First Nations' responses have, in fact, been varied. At their most striking, the two communities blocked the runways at the Ring of Fire exploration camps for two months. It must be stressed that Marten Falls Chief Elijah Moonias is not opposed to the mining per se; he is determined that his community benefits to the utmost.

The question remains as to whether rewards for the First Nations will be as great as they would like.

Webequie Chief Cornelius Wabasse declared in the local Matawa Messenger, "I now feel assured that we have sent a very powerful message to the government and the mining and mineral industry. If there is going to be any business on our lands, we are going to play an active role throughout the entire process."

"The question remains as to whether rewards for the First Nations will be so great."

Mike Fox sets out his own theoretical roadmap to engage all parties, "The foundational pieces to the collective success of the Ring of Fire will be First Nation early stage engagement, collective involvement, deep participation and long-term partnership."

"The Ontario government needs to assist First Nations with geo-science within their land use planning's Terms of Reference, particularly those First Nations affected by the visionary platforms associated with the Ring of Fire."

"The key to community acceptance of any development process will be the land-use planning tool that has to take into consideration development initiatives, and not just traditional ecological knowledge and Ministry of Natural Resources-led regional bioscience studies."

The players and the population

There are currently over 30 companies exploring in the Ring of Fire, including Cliffs Natural Resources, Freewest Resources, Spider Resources and Noront Resources.

Noront states that it is the dominant land-holder in the Ring of Fire and that it will continue to delineate and prove its discoveries with appropriate reports. On June 16 2010 Noront signed an exploration agreement with the Webequie First Nation, an example of how commercial interests can work with local communities on traditional lands.

The agreement, inter alia, sets out protocols for exploration on these traditional lands and stresses Noront's desire for a subsequent Impact Benefit Agreement. Noront is also seeking a similar MoU with the Marten Falls; the exploration agreement was signed in April 2009.

The complex task of constructing the Ring of Fire regulatory roadmap falls to Christine Kaszycki, Ontario's Ring of Fire co-ordinator who provided an update on the project:

"Companies such as Cliffs Natural Resources, Noront Resources and KWG Resources are continuing their work on evaluating their respective projects. Noront Resources released a technical report on October 25 2010 that outlines its development plans. Cliffs Natural Resources is currently undertaking pre-feasibility studies that will inform project planning decisions as we move into 2011. KWG Resources is currently undertaking geotechnical studies for its proposed rail corridor."

"Both Cliffs and Noront have initiated environmental baseline studies and we would anticipate these forming a baseline for environmental assessment which may be initiated over the coming year," says Kaszycki. Track Mobile Crusher Plant

The environment

"It is a given that environmental groups will oppose development, even if the proposed development can bring community employment, enterprise development and wealth creation for Ontario First Nations as a way to eliminate the poverty levels," states Fox, summing up a state of mind all too prevalent when mining is mentioned within earshot of environmental lobbies.

"There is no doubt that the project brings both enormous promise and challenges for all."

"At the end of the day, it will be a balance between natural resource development and natural resource protection that will be determined by the First Nation communities affected by the Ring of Fire." Quartz Mining Mill Equipment

The view of Anna Baggio, of the Wildlands League, a chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society is keen to point out the negative side:

"Mining activities are superseding the protection of ecological and cultural values. There is very little government oversight, no environmental assessment process and no mechanism for First Nation control."

"And for good measure, Ontario Nature is not far behind… there has been an escalation in…the Ring of Fire…shattering once pristine habitat and home to species found in few other places in the world…the Ring of Fire threatens an environmental disaster that could be likened to a mini tar sands."

Last words

The last words are Fox's: "There is no doubt that the Ring of Fire brings both enormous promise as well as enormous challenges for all. The enormity of the discoveries within the Ring of Fire could bring multi-generational community benefits if the regulatory roadmap is clear, if enabling mechanisms for community participation and partnership are created by government, and if industry brings their best practices forward." Arnco goes green to cut oil dependency

US supplier of flatproofing products, Arnco has turned its focus to renewable and environmental-based components to reduce reliance on crude supplies, it was announced at MINExpo 2008 in Las Vegas. At a time of high oil prices, the company has developed a green technology called ecofil in a bid to reduce dependency on oil. The ecofil tire flatproofing component uses 100% virgin polymer and can cut costs by 25%, pumping at higher speeds than conventional equipment, the company said. Dolomite Crusher Supplier

"For years we have been dependent on petrochemicals as a major component of our patented polyurethane technology, and for years we have been trying to end that dependency. Now we have taken the first step," said Arnco president Larry Carapellotti. The ecofil component is designed to work with tube type or tubeless tires for off-road vehicles and is currently being developed in different formulations for specific applications, said the company. Going Green With Drilling Technology

In late summer 2010 the mining industry media reported the development of drilling technology that was said to tick many if not all of the 'green' boxes. The kit, which is based on closed-loop water hydraulics, is said to use 0.01% of the energy of some existing systems and 60% less water, with the financial and environmental benefits that implies. Garnet Grinding Mill

But if you look behind the headlines here you'll see there is little that's new. For one thing, the technology has been under development for 25 years.

In fact, according to independent mining consultant Dr Robert Dowdell, "I've heard about this technology being a major new innovation so many times in the past. It's been touted all over the place."

The very idea of becoming greener on the energy side is not even a priority for some mining companies. For example, a Rio Tinto spokesman says, "Energy efficiency isn't one of the major strengths of our mine innovation."

And according to a spokesman for consultancy SRK Exploration, "There hasn't been a great deal of change in this respect in the industry. The biggest push at the moment is to be seen to be greener in terms of such things as on-site recycling, rather than energy efficiency."

Electric revolution

"The very idea of becoming greener on the energy side is not even a priority for some mining companies."

One mining company that is grasping the energy nettle though, is Anglo American subsidiary Anglo Platinum, which is switching from traditional compressed-air drilling kit to electrical systems, supplied by Hilti.

As the company's group energy engineer Gerhard van den Berg explains, "Our Twickenham mine is now fully electric, as is our Brakfontein operation (a newly developed incline shaft at Bokoni platinum mine), and all our new projects will use electric drilling. We're also phasing out compressed air, specifically the compressors themselves, as the equipment reaches the end of its life."

There's a fundamental reason for this. "The point with electrical systems is that you're using the electrical energy directly," van den Berg says. "With compressed air systems, that energy first has to be applied to compressing the air, so in an electrical system the losses are inherently lower."

"We commissioned a report from South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which shows that compressed-air drilling 'costs' us 7.2kWh per metre drilled, whereas electrical drilling comes in at only 0.1kWh. Electrical systems are more expensive than compressed air but the savings offset this, to the point where changing over to electrical systems is cost-neutral," he says.

Electric drilling was a considered choice as well. Van den Berg explains, "We've also carried out tests in conjunction with the CSIR on hydro-powered drills but we found they produced a lot of water. They're better than compressed-air systems but they still can't beat electrical kit."

There are other advantages to electrical drilling, he says. "First, noise levels. Electric drills are three times quieter than systems using compressed air, which goes a long way to eliminating noise-induced hearing loss."

"All in all, switching to electrical drilling has raised our productivity."

"There's also the issue of oil for rock-drill lubrication - compressed air systems need it; electrical systems don't. Before, we could have tons of oil down a mine, but that's not the case now with the electrical systems."

"That brings with it a variety of benefits associated with the environment down in the mine but also with the flotation process on the surface to recover the PGMs," he says.

"In the past, the presence of oil in the ore would interfere with flotation, so we had to add reagents in the flotation tanks to counteract this. Now, with no oil present those reagents aren't needed." Dolomite Crusher Supplier

Symbiosis

It's this symbiosis between a cleaner environment and more efficient production that in Anglo Platinum's view makes energy efficiency worthwhile. As its head of engineering Krish Pillay says, "It's always been an issue for us but it's also a question of taking a long-term view, given the problems in recent times in South Africa with energy supplies and the heightened global awareness these days of emissions."

"There are business benefits as well of course," he concedes, "in that energy efficiency has a positive influence on the bottom line. All in all, switching to electrical drilling has raised our productivity."

For now though, Anglo Platinum may be little more than a prophet in the wilderness. It's perhaps difficult to persuade some mining companies of the bottom-line advantages of energy efficiency when the prices of many commodities are at all-time highs and have every chance of rising further. But that is bound change, and when it does it's reasonable to expect it to herald a much greater demand for energy-efficient technology.

The mine contains an estimated 18.4Mt of proven reserves

The Central Ashanti gold mine is located approximately 57km south-west of Obuasi town and 195km north-west of Ghana's capital Accra. Formerly known as Ayanfuri gold project, the mine has produced in excess of 300,000oz of gold between 1994 and 2001.  It is owned by Central Ashanti Gold Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Perseus, which owns 650km² of tenements on the Ashanti gold belt.

The project is currently in the planning stage with a detailed feasibility study completed in July 2009. Production is scheduled to begin in 2011. The life of the mine is estimated to be approximately ten years. Head Pulley

Reserves

The mine contains an estimated 18.4Mt of proven reserves graded at 1.4g/t Au and 37.2 Mt of probable reserves graded at 1.1g/t Au. Measured and indicated resources total 29.9Mt graded at 2.1g/t Au. Inferred resources have been estimated to be 62.1Mt at 2.2g/t.

Geology

The deposit is hosted within the Man Shield of the Precambrian aged West African Craton. The deposit flanks the western end of the Ashanti greenstone belt along the Obuasi-Akropong gold corridor. Hematite Iron Ore Crusher

"The Central Ashanti gold mine is located approximately 57km southwest of Obuasi town and 195km northwest of Ghana's capital Accra."

Intensely folded and faulted birimian flysch-type metasediments of the Paleoproterozoic age overlie the entire project area.

These sediments are metamorphosed to upper greenschist faces and include dacitic volcaniclastics, greywackes and argillaceous (phyllitic) sediments.

The sediments are intruded along multiple regional bodies by a number of small basin-type or Cape Coast-type granite structures.

The intrusions vary in size and shape from 200m to 400m long and 40 to 150m wide egg-shaped plugs, to longer and narrower sills and dykes that measure more than 2,000m in length and between 50m and 100m in width.

Regionally, the deposit hosts minor amounts of cherty and manganiferous exhalative sediments. Graphitic schists coincide with the main shear (thrust) zones. Parallel to partially parallel cleavage and bedding follow the regional trend of the 50° striking, steep to near vertical, southeast and north-west dipping Akropong structures.

Mineralisation

Gold mineralisation at the mine is found primarily within granite structures. Two or three generations of several, narrow quartz veins host the mineralisation. The quartz veins are associated with nearly 3% pyrite, minor arsenopyrite and lesser amounts of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena and rutile.

Gold observed at or near the margins of the veins, occurs as fine grains along the boundaries of sulphide grain or in sulphide fractures. Coarse visible gold is hosted within the quartz. Mineralisation also occurs in shear zones that host the classic Ashanti-style sediments.

"The deposit will be mined using hydraulic excavators ranging in size between 120 and 200t, with a backhoe configuration."

Mining and processing

The deposit will be mined using hydraulic excavators ranging in size between 120 and 200t, with a backhoe configuration. Depending on the swell, flitches averaging 2 x 2.5m will be used.

Ore and waste will be excavated and loaded within the marked boundaries, thereby ensuring maximum ore recovery with minimum contamination.

Due to the intact strength of the rocks, fresh rocks will be blasted heavily. Control blasting techniques including pre-splitting, buffer rows and trimming will be used to minimise the impact of blasting on the slopes.

Mining will be carried out to support a mill feed rate of 5.5Mtpa of high grade primary ore. Processing will be carried out in a 5.5Mtpa gold processing plant that will include a primary jaw crusher, single stage SAG mill, gravity circuit, flotation circuit, regrind ball mill, concentrate CIL circuit and elution circuit.

Contractors

A mining operations contract is yet to be awarded. The scope of the contract will include site preparation, construction and maintenance of haul-road, loading and transportation of ore to the ROM pad and hauling of waste material to the waste dump.

Perseus will undertake the technical services of the project including planning the mining activities, scheduling of production, grade controlling and ore blending.

Driefontein Gold Mine, South Africa

Driefontein is located in South Africa’s West Wits Line goldfield, about 60km south west of Johannesburg. Driefontein Consolidated Ltd (Driefontein) was created in 1981 with the merger of the West Driefontein and East Driefontein mines. In January 1998, Gold Fields Ltd assumed management responsibility for the operation, which became a wholly owned subsidiary in May 1999. The mine, which has milled over 222Mt of ore and recovered over 102.5Moz of gold since 1952, employs 16,600 people. The average yield over the mine’s 55-year lifetime has been 14.2g/t.

GEOLOGY AND RESERVES

The goldfield is part of the Witwatersrand Basin. Gold mineralisation occurs at depths between 1,000m and 4,000m below surface and is hosted within two major orebodies; the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) and the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR). A third body, the Middelvlei Reef (MR), is a minor contributor to the resource base. The CLR comprises various facies from single carbon seam to single and multiple band conglomerates. It is a high-grade reef at the base of the Central Rand Group, and at Driefontein dips at 25°. Graphite Processing Equipment

As of mid-2006, Driefontein’s proven and probable reserves within the exiting mine infrastructure totalled 55.6Mt at a grade of 5.9g/t gold, containing 14.1Moz of gold. A further 31Mt of probable reserves at 8.2g/t lie below the existing infrastructure (deper than 3,420m below surface), containing an additional 8.3Moz of gold. The mine’s total proven and probable reserves amount to 94.6Mt grading an average 7.4g/t, and containing 21.6Moz of gold.

MINING

Driefontein is a conventional South African underground mine in which opportunities for increasing workplace mechanisation are limited. It comprises eight operating shaft systems which access the VCR and CLR. Shafts 1, 2, 4 and 5 access the eastern part of the mine while shafts 5, 6 and 7 access the west part. As the west part is depleted, production will be maintained by increased use of 1 and 5 shafts. Grizzly Feeder

At present, production comes from a combination of longwall and scattered mining methods. This will continue on the VCR while extraction of the CLR will be based on dip-pillar mining with backfilling of the mined-out areas to facilitate secondary extraction of some 50% of the remaining pillars. The primary layout consists of 40m wide pillars with 140m spans and, after secondary removal, aims to achieve an 87.5% extraction.

The current operations are classed as being at intermediate to deep environments, and are seismically active.

ORE PROCESSING

Driefontein operates three primary metallurgical plants and a secondary recovery plant. New milling facilities have been installed in both the No.1 and No.2 gold-recovery plants, with a two-year programme having taken place to recover gold that had been locked up in the old equipment.

The East Plant processing route consists of three-stage crushing, rod and pebble milling closed by hydrocyclones, pulp thickening, pre-aeration, air agitated leaching, drum filtration, zinc precipitation and smelting to produce doré. The current operating capacity is 240,000t/month. The company aims to incorporate run-of-mine ore milling and to replace filtration with carbon-in-pulp recovery while increasing its capacity to 300,000t/month.

The West Plant consists of the VCR and CLR crushers combined with a central milling and treatment section that is divided into high-grade and low-grade sections. The process route is similar to that of the East Plant. Waste rock comprises approximately 3% of hauled ore and the average throughput is 170,000t/month.

The West Reclaim Plant mills rock-dump (waste and low-grade) material in a circuit consisting of primary crushing, SAG milling, two-stage cycloning and thickening. The product is leached and treated in a pump-cell plant. Loaded carbon is sent to the Leeudoorn metallurgical plant at Kloof for gold recovery and carbon regeneration. The plant is operating below design capacity at 115,000t/month of feed rock.

PRODUCTION AND COST

In the 2005-06 financial year, Driefontein produced 1,150,000oz of gold from 6.87Mt of ore milled. Of this amount, 3Mt of low-grade ore were sourced from surface material, with 3.87Mt being hoisted. This was marginally lower than the output the previous year, with some higher-grade areas having been affected by increased seismicity, while the overall yield from underground decreased from 8.3g/t to 8.1g/t. The combined yield was 5.2g/t, down from 5.4g/t the year before. As a result, total cash costs rose from US$330/oz in 2004–05 to US$355/oz in 2005–06, with total production costs of US$392/oz.

THE FUTURE

Gold Fields has been carrying out a feasibility study into ways of accessing the 8.8Moz of gold that lie below the mine’s existing infrastructure. Involving deepening the existing No.9 sub-vertical shaft, this would extend Driefontein’s life by at least 13 years to around 2035. The company has also been evaluating the recovery of high-grade Carbon Leader reef pillars from the No.10 Shaft complex.
