Mineral Milling Processing

Milling, sometimes also known as fine grinding, pulverising or comminution, is the process of reducing materials to some powder of fine or very fine size. It's distinct from crushing or granulation, , involving size reduction with a rock, pebble or grain size. Milling is used to produce a selection of materials which either have end uses themselves or are recycleables or additives used inside the manufacture of other products.


A great deal of mills has been developed for particular applications. Particular kinds ofmills may be used to grind a large variety of materials whereas other medication is used for several specific grinding requiremenwhat locations to find gold mining equipmentts. The hardness of the material is probably the most important characteristic to take into account when choosing which kind of mill to decide on. Trying to grind a fabric which is way too hard, for example sand in most forms of beater mill, will result, either in costly damage to the mill or an expensive maintenance requirement. Most types of easily available hammer mills for agricultural grinding are not suited to grinding most forms of minerals.


Hardness of minerals is expressed on Mohs scale - a numerical index including 1 for talc (the softest mineral) to 10 for diamond (the most difficult known material). Table 2 below shows Mohs' scale of hardness.

Glossary for your milling process


Milling circuit - open and closed. The milling circuit will be the complete mill system from beginning to end, including feed mechanism, mill, classifier, separator, product collector, etc. In the closed mill circuit the oversize particles are returned in the post milling strategies to be remilled (see figure below) whereas with an open circuit the process doesn't have feedback loop.


Air classification. Classification or sizing of particles utilizing a mechanical air separator.


Batch mills. Mills which get a discrete volume of charge that is milled and then discharged. The process will be repeated.


Continuous mills. A mill which may accept a continuous flow of feedstock and hence can operate on a continuous basis. Both batch and continuous mills have their relative merits.


Peripheral and trunnion discharge. For cylindrical mills that are continuously fed, the production with the final product may be through either the periphery from the mill (peripheral discharge) or with the far end from the mill (trunnion discharge).


Ball Mills


Ball mills offer a similar experience in concept for the rod mill but are arrested for steel balls instead of the rods. The mill includes a cylindrical drum, sometimes tapered at one end, and usually has a charge of steel balls (as much as 40% by volume) ranging in size up to 125mm for larger mills. Product size is as small as 0.005mm, but product size is dependant upon the time the charge spends within the grinding zone and therefore the reduction minute rates are a function of the throughput. The lining material is crucial as there is a significant amount of wear occurring due to the action of the steel balls. The pace of rotation is optimum at about 75% of critical speed. Some mills are compartmentalised with each subsequent section using a smaller ball size.


Roller Mills


There are two distinct form of roller mill. The first is some rollers which rotate around a central axis in just a drum. The reduction occurs between your rollers and also the drum. The second is and then there are a group of fixed rollers and a rotating table. The milling occurs involving the rollers and the table. This sort of mill is used for dry grinding only and accepts only relatively soft minerals. Hammer mills

Vibratory mills

China warns Australia on carbon tax

NSL Consolidated close to start of operation at the new Kurnool plant


NSL Consolidated is accelerating towards the start of operation at the new Kurnool iron ore plant in India with the transition from construction power to full operatsand and cement packging equipments chinese producting power at the plant.


Construction and staged commissioning of the Phase 1 Kurnool iron ore dry separation plant continues as the company finalises optimisation of the process, with final commissioning expected to occur before the end of June.


Highlighting the rapid pace at which NSL continues to advance towards first production at Kurnool, mid-last month the company achieved the milestone first ex gate sales of iron ore into the Indian domestic market.


Towards the end of the month NSL announced it had begun mining at the nearby Mangal iron ore mine.


The company is targeting an initial steady production rate of 200,000 beneficiated tonnes per annum from the first phase of operations at the Kurnool stockyard, with beneficiated grades of up to 58% achieved last month.


A 58% iron ore product sells domestically for about US$90 per tonne, meaning that at 200,000 tonnes per annum production, NSL is looking at first phase revenue of $18 million.


In Phase 2 of the project, NSL aims to ramp up production to 400,000 tonnes per annum at higher grades of between 58% and 62% iron. First sales are anticipated in the first half of 2013.


NSL is targeting production of 1.5 million tonnes per annum by the end of 2014, which is achievable through strategic acquisitions and supply agreements.


NSL is the only foreign company to own and operate iron ore mines in India.


The Kurnool stockyard in southeast India is a 12 acre industrial site located adjacent to NSL’s existing Kuja iron mine in Andhra Pradesh. The stockyard will source its iron from the nearby Mangal iron ore mine.

Firestone Diamonds appoints new Chairman and Chief Executive


Firestone Diamonds on Wednesday announced a number of changes to its board. The diamond mining and exploration company revealed that Philip Kenny, who has been Chief Esimons 5 1 2 shorthead cone crusher specsxecutive Officer of the company since it was admitted to AIM in 1998, has been appointed Executive Chairman with immediate effect.


Michael Hampton who has been acting as Chairman on an interim basis will remain as a Non Executive Director of the company. Tim Wilkes, who has been Chief Operating Officer of the company since 2005, has been appointed to the Board as Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect. Welcoming Mr Wilkes to the Board, Mr Kenny commented: "Tim Wilkes has been a key member of Firestone's senior management team for some years and has been instrumental in developing Firestone's mining operations in Lesotho and Botswana."

State Government approves Geraldton Port Train Unloader Upgrade


Mount Gibson Iron Limited is pleased to announce that the State Government has approved the metal used in vericle jaws of stone crusherupgrade of the train unloading facility (“upgrade”) at the Geraldton Port.


As a result of the upgrade, rail unloading capacity at the Geraldton Port will increase to 3000 tph, allowing Mount Gibson to increase production from it Mid West operations through the commencement of operations at Extension Hill.


Mount Gibson has agreed to fund the upgrade up to $20 million and it is expected to be completed in time for the first shipments from Extension Hill in the September 2011 quarter.


The upgraded train unloading facility will remain a common user facility with Mount Gibson receiving a rebate from the Geraldton Port Authority should other users wish to use the facility over the next 10 years, capped at 20 million tonnes of third party throughput.


Mount Gibson’s Managing Director Luke Tonkin said: “We are pleased to have finally agreed with the Geraldton Port Authority to upgrade the existing train unloading facility. It will allow increased throughput of the facility that will more closely match the shiploading capacity through the Geraldton Port’s dedicated iron ore shiploader at Berth 5. We acknowledge the support and cooperation of the Minister for Transport and Disability Services, the Honourable Simon O’Brien and the concurrence of State Treasury.”

Gammon Gold lowers 2010 outlook on Mexico mine shutdown


Canadian precious metals miner Gammon Gold Inc lowered its 2010 production and cash outlook for its Ocampo mine to reflect thvsi crusher manufacturers in chinae shutdown of operations at its El Cubo mine in Mexico.


In 2010, Gammon expects gold production at Ocampo to range from 100,000 ounces of gold to 110,000 ounces of gold and silver output of 4.40 million ounces to 4.95 million ounces, with total cash costs of $425 to $450 per gold equivalent ounce. Gammon also said 154 contract workers and underground mining equipment redeployed from El Cubo would support expanded operations at Ocampo till the end of the year. In March, the company had said it was expecting consolidated gold production of 150,000 ounces to 180,000 ounces and silver production of 6.1 million to 6.8 million ounces, with total cash cost estimated at $440 to $475 per gold equivalent ounce. However, a labor dispute that began at the El Cubo mine in June resulted in an indefinite suspension of operations and 397 union workers losing their jobs at the mine.

Signature Reports Additional RC Drilling Results from Konongo Gold Project


Signature Metals Limited is very pleased to announce further results from RC drilling at the Konongo Gold Project, located in the world class Ashanti Gold Belt of Ghana.


Significant results include:



  • 6 metres at 9.88 g/t gold from 118 metres

  • 4 metres at 1.56 g/t gold from 34 metres

  • 6 metres at 1.11g/t gold from 10 metres

  • 5 metres at 1.04g/t gold from 5 metres


The intersection of 6 metres at 9.88g/t gobench grinder gold coastld is the first result from drilling at the Boabedroo South deposit. Drillhole KGRC0059 targeted mineralisation at the southern end of the Boabedroo South pit and specifically tested the updip extension to mineralisation intersected in hole 05BBSD003 (17 metres at 2.19 g/t gold).


The hole was abandoned in mineralisation after drilling intersected an old stope. Significantly the next drilling along strike is 40 metres to the south and north indicating that further drill testing is required in this area.


The remainder of the results received were from drilling of the southern end of the Obenemase “D” Lode and from the Obenemase East area. Mineralisation in the Obenemase East area is hosted in the Tarkwaian sequence and strikes to the north-east. This is the same orientation as mineralisation in the rest of the Konongo Gold Project and in contrast to the Obenemase deposit which strikes to the NNW. Historical drilling results in this area include:



  • 11 metres at 2.19g/t gold from 21 metres

  • 10 metres at 2.13g/t gold from 80 metres

  • 8 metres at 2.52g/t gold from 44 metres

  • 2 metres at 5.98g/t gold from 14 metres

  • 2 metres at 4.96g/t gold from 34 metres

  • 8 metres at 1.98g/t gold from 74 metres

  • 10 metres at 1.68g/t gold from 8 metres

  • 8 metres at 1.64g/t gold from 34 metres

  • 6 metres at 1.56 g/t gold from 62 metres

  • 6 metres at 1.39g/t gold from 14 metres


No resource has ever been calculated for the Obenemase East Deposit.


The presence of shallow mineralisation, as well as the fact that it is less than 1 kilometre from the plant, means that this area may provide a viable source of feed. Drilling in this programme aimed to test extensions to mineralisation to the north and south where access has recently been improved as part of earthworks around the plant area. Results included:



  • 6 metres at 1.11g/t gold from 10 metres

  • 5 metres at 1.04g/t gold from 5 metres

  • 11 metres at 0.54g/t gold from 28 metres

  • 4 metres at 1.56g/t gold from 34 metres

  • 4 metres at 1.17g/t gold from 47 metres


These results confirm the continuity of mineralisation along strike, albeit at a lower tenor than in the historical drilling. Several prospective targets have been identified from this drilling, most notably the result of 4 metres at 1.56g/t gold in KGRC55 which was located close to the area where the Obenemase mineralised trend would intersect the main Konongo trend. Follow up drilling is planned to test this highly prospective intersection area.


Results from the southern end of the Obenemase “D” Lode were of a lower tenor than those received from the northern portion of the deposit. No high grade shoots were intersected in the drilling, which was also constrained by access issues, therefore follow up work will focus on the northern part of the deposit where 3 high grade shoots were delineated in the initial part of the programme. All results from the drilling at Obenemase East and along the Obenemase ‘D” Lode are shown on Figure 2.


Results are still pending from 37 RC drillholes at the Boabedroo South deposit, and will be released to the market as soon as they are received and interpreted.

New Zealand Government aims to speed up big mining projects


what equipment is used in coal miningThe Government is looking at ways of speeding up approvals for big mining projects because endless court action is "frustrating" companies and costing them millions.


The Ministry for the Environment is investigating new laws which would allow granting of resource consents for "regionally significant" projects to be accelerated.


They would also limit the avenues that could be used to appeal against consents.


Energy and Resources Minister Phil Heatley said the oil and gas industry, property developers and groups wanting to build wind farms were expressing frustration at repeated appeals against approval for their projects.


"When you've got a regionally significant project, it's just crazy that you just get them taken back to court time and time again," he told TV3's The Nation.


But the Opposition believes the proposed changes to the Resource Management Act (RMA) will limit the public's right to object.


Mr Heatley's comments come as conservation groups begin their High Court appeal against a ruling that allows Australian mining company Bathurst Resources to remove coal from the Denniston Plateau on the South Island's West Coast.


Forest and Bird and local conservationists are challenging an Environment Court decision that said the effects of mining on climate change would not be taken into account in deciding on Bathurst's consent.


Forest and Bird is also appealing against a related consent.


Bathurst gained approval to mine on the biodiversity-rich site a year ago.


Its shares have lost two-thirds of their value in the past year.


Mr Heatley said he met Bathurst officials last week and they were "tremendously frustrated" at the delays.


"We've got a court system where people can continue to oppose, and what we're saying is, maybe we need to bring in a consenting system where ... you have a first chance, last chance in court, it's only appealable on point of law, and then the answer is either yes or no, and you can get on with it."


He said the Government was considering a system similar to the national consenting process,, which allowed for the fast-tracking of projects such as the $1.4 billion Waterview motorway project in Auckland.


For the Waterview scheme, the public were assured that they would still be heard, but a strict time limit was placed on the consent process.


Community groups called it a "rort" of the democratic process.


Under the national consenting process, the Environment Minister can "call in" significant projects and refer them to a board of inquiry - appointed by the minister - instead of leaving them to be dealt with by local authorities.


"If it's a really significant project in a region - huge amount of jobs, environmental concerns are significant - it might be something that shouldn't go through councils and all the rest of it," Mr Heatley said.


Mining ventures might not be considered nationally significant, but they could pass a test of regional significance.


Labour's environment spokesman, Grant Robertson, said the proposed changes undermined the Resource Management Act and would limit public participation.


"The RMA may not be perfect, but it allows all New Zealanders to have a say on how development occurs," he said.


"Just because that might not always suit a developer or the Government is not a good enough reason to stifle public participation.


"Of course there will be cases from time to time that justify an expedited process. The national significance test is a reasonable one for that, but extending it to a regional level is a bridge too far."


He said Bathurst would have known when it applied to mine on the Denniston Plateau that it would be a contentious proposal.


An independent board of commissioners granted resource consent to take coal from Denniston on the grounds that it would bring "enormous financial benefit", including 424 jobs, to the Buller district and the West Coast region.


But the commissioners also admitted that they granted the consent with "considerable reservations and anguish" because of the rare ecosystems that would be displaced.

Proposed Pebble gold mine faces long, difficult journey


Mining in Alaska isn't as easy as it used to be. Discovery Metals has reported on progress on the commissioning and the ramp up of copper-silver concentrate production at its 100% owned Boseto Copper Project in north-western Botswana.


The Projexpolders use in quarrying industryect is designed to produce an average of approximately 36,000 tonnes copper and 1.1 million ounces silver per annum in concentrate from 3 million tonnes per year of ore feed.


Open pit mining production at the Zeta Deposit was 150,000 tonnes of ore in July. The quantum of ore mined was less than planned, with the third (and last) 350 tonne excavator still awaiting commissioning at month end (requires electrical repairs). Operation of this excavator is necessary to allow the design mining rate (delivering 250,000 tonnes of ore to the Boseto concentrator each month) and mining costs to be achieved.


Late commissioning of the third excavator limited ore mining to mainly transitional type ore with some oxide. At month end mining had reached the 940 level, which is approximately the top of the sulphide mineralisation zone. Mining of this zone is projected to commence from mid-August.


Waste removal is concentrating on lengthening the pit to the NE and SW and on the first cutback on the hanging wall side above the exposed sulphide zone.


Planned progress in August is to continue to increase the rate of processing towards the ultimate goal of 250,000 month, to commence processing of sulphide ore and to significantly increase the tonnage and grade of concentrate produced.


Discovery Metals’ Managing Director, Brad Sampson said “We aimed to achieve 50% of design capacity in our first full month of commissioning at Boseto and both the mine and process plant have performed at above this rate. Commissioning of the final excavator will increase ore delivery to the plant and allow a further improvement in the quantity of ore processed in August. Along with recent strong exploration results and Ore Reserves and Mineral Resources delineation at the Project, Discovery Metals is establishing the foundations for long term copper production in the low sovereign risk jurisdiction of Botswana.”

Illegal mining blamed for floods in Ghana cocoa region


Ghana President John Atta Mills pledged on Monday to fight illegal mining which has been blamed for floods that swept the molino vertical zenith lm170kWest African nation's cocoa growing Eastern region last week, killing at least five people.

"The activities of the 'galamsey' operators (as illegal mining is known in Ghana) have caused enough damage to life and property and we can no longer allow them to continue," he said. Other miners ‘may follow’ after Anglo case


With Anglo American Ssimons 5 5 a cone crusherA in the sights of two separate groups of miners that are suing it for compensation after contracting silicosis or silico-tuberculosis, the UK-based law firm representing the larger of these groups has not ruled out action against other mining houses.


In the latest action, 450 gold mine workers have lodged papers in the London High Court claiming what could amount to millions of pounds’ compensation for the miners, or, where they have died, their dependants. Anglo American SA, a Johannesburg-registered wholly owned subsidiary of London-based Anglo American plc, has not formally been served with the papers, and UK law firm Leigh Day & Company , representing the miners, has six months in which to do this, said Leigh Day partner Richard Meeran, announcing the action in Johannesburg yesterday. Anglo American said because papers had not been served, it had not examined the arguments put forward and could not comment on the London-based litigation. The miners claim the company did not properly protect them from dust, which led to their contracting silicosis, or silico- tuberculosis. Mr Meeran said while proper protection would...

SilverCrest’s Initial Gold & Silver Production Imminent

SilverCrest’s President, J. Scott Drever, states that, “We are very excited about the forthcoming metal pour at Santa Elena Mine. Going forward, our next major objectives will be achieving full production and commercial production levels. Current gold and silver prices are significantly above those of US$765 and US$11.95, respectively, used in our Prefeasibility Study base case which showed an after‐tax, internal rate of return of 70.3%. The robust economics of the project are expected to provide early, free cash flow to implement the Company’s aggressive strategy for corporate growth.”


The Company is assessing the potential for resource and future production expansion, including exploration of additional parallel zones to the Santa Elena Main Zone, and possible development of current underground resources. SilverCrest is also examining potential re‐treatment of the heaps with conventional milling, and the feasibility of processing the nearby Cruz de Mayo silver deposit at the Santa Elena facilities. The Company believes that, collectively, these developments could significantly raise annual production rates at the Santa Elena facilities and increase mine life. Further studies are required to demonstrate that SilverCrest’s additional resources are economically viable.
