The offtake agreement with Guoda Gold does not extend to concentrate that will be produced from the high grade A39 silver deposit at Mt Carlton. Negotiations with a number of potential offtakers for A39 concentrates are ongoing.

Long strike over at Vale owned nickel mine


Unionized workers at a nickel mine owned by Brazilian mining giant Vale in eastern Canada ended an 18-month strike, theused gold mining equipments sale parties said. The 130 mine workers at the Voisey's Bay facility on the Labrador coast voted 88 percent in favor of a new contract, negotiated last week with the help of a government mediator, the United Steelworkers' Union said in a statement.


"Our members are returning to work with their heads held high," said Steelworkers staff representative Boyd Bussey. "They stood up for their families and their communities and fought for what they believed in. The company wanted a three-year deal, but we were looking for stability for our members and our communities and we're happy to have a five-year agreement," Bussey said. The new contract takes effect immediately and runs until January 2016. The deal includes unspecified wage hikes, increases in pension contributions, and a cost of living allowance and bonus program, Vale said in a statement...

Canada blocks development of major gold-copper mine project in B.C.


The federal government on Tuesday blocked the contromill manufacturers south africaversial Prosperity gold-copper mine project in B.C.'s Chilcotin, citing what it labelled to be "significant" environmental concerns. Announced by federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice, the decision overrules the B.C. government, which had given full approval for the major project to proceed.


"We believe in balancing resource stewardship with economic development," Prentice said in a written statement. "The significant adverse environmental effects of the Prosperity project cannot be justified as it is currently proposed." B.C's Minister of State for Mining Randy Hawes called Ottawa's decision "disappointing," but said he is not yet ready to declare the project dead. "We should go back and take a look and see if there's a way that this can be represented and restructured in a way that could work so that it could gain the approval," Hawes said, adding he had already talked to the company behind the project, Taseko Mines. "I frankly think what they [the federal government] want to see is some changes and some restructuring of the project, if it's possible," he added...

European Stocks Rise After Bin Laden's Death

In Germany, the DAX 30 climbed 0.2% to 7527.64, led by gains for Commerzbank, up 3.2% after reporting a rise in earnings. "What's moving the DAX is probably the news that bin Laden is dead, because that also pulls down crude-oil prices," said Andre Saenger, an analyst at IG Index. "Since the rebellions started in Egypt and Tunisia and the war in Libya, crude oil has gone up. Now we see it going down and it should be very supportive for the DAX." Oil prices declined earlier in the day, but at the time of the European close Nymex crude futures for June delivery were up 62 cents at nearly $115 a barrel...

Quadra FNX Announces Record Revenue of $260 Million for the 2010 Third Quarter


Quadra FNX Mining is pleased to provide its third quarter 2010 financial and operational results. The third quarter of 2010 marked the first full quarter for the combined Quadra FNX and the strong financial performance reflects the increased production as a result of the merger, as well as the stronger copper price.


As reported in the Press Release dated October 18, 2010, the US operations had a mixed quarter. At Robinson, production rebounded versus the second quarter and confirmatory drilling indicates that the historic underground workings below the Ruthcoal laboratory raymond mill pit are not expected to have any further impact on the remainder of 2010 or any impact on 2011 or on the reserve base. The operations team has now completed the generation of a block model for the mine that reflects the extensive metallurgical program over the last two years, improving the ability to predict production going forward. Production at Carlota remained largely flat and technical studies are ongoing as how to deal with the fines in the ore body, which are affecting percolation. It has now been concluded that these are not a local effect but occur throughout the ore body and planned programmes include material stacking strategies, processing options and leaching strategies. A review of the pit slope in the area of the Kelly fault has also indicated that a change in the pit wall angle may be necessary, and that increased stripping may be required. The economic and reserve implications of this potential change are currently being studied and will be published once finalized. On the positive side, the Company has developed a new ore genesis model which improves our understanding of the fines issue and supports exploration potential at depth. An initial drill program will be following this up in the fourth quarter.


The Canadian operations reached a significant milestone when commercial production was declared at Morrison on September 1, 2010. The ramp up of Morrison is on schedule and the concept of selective mining continues with a focus on ore quality versus tonnes mined. Podolsky struggled with adverse ground conditions, but production is expected to rebound in the fourth quarter as the high grade stope initially planned for the third quarter is brought into production. McCreedy West met production tonnage and copper grade goals in the third quarter and production for the year is expected to be on target. The Company continues to investigate the restart of nickel production at the Sudbury operations. Key considerations in making this decision include the processing terms from Vale, nickel prices and infrastructure capabilities.


In Chile, third quarter production at the Franke mine was similar to the second quarter as a result of variable recoveries, despite success with the changes to the leach pad height on some of the pads leached. Adjustments to the leach parameters at Franke, particularly the leach solution strategies, will continue as well as adjustments to the crush size going forward.


During the quarter, significant advancements were made on the Sierra Gorda and Victoria development projects, and it was announced that ongoing drilling at the Victoria property had expanded and added considerable confidence to Zone 4, which has now been delineated over a vertical length of over 3,000 feet, yielding grades significantly higher than are typical in the Sudbury camp. Studies are currently being initiated to support a decision on an advanced underground exploration program and work is processing on environment permitting and with First Nations negotiations.


Partnership discussions and the technical work for the ongoing Financing Study on Sierra Gorda continued through the quarter. The Financing Study is still targeted to be completed by the end of the first quarter of next year, with the Feasibility Study to follow. The base case for project has increased in scope and the development plan now envisions a plus 25 year operation processing 111ktpd of sulphide ore at start-up, expanding to 190ktpd at the end of the fourth year. The Scoping Study released in mid-2009 had a more modest throughput of 111ktpd and an initial capital cost of $1.7 billion. For the purposes of discussions with potential partners, the Company is assuming a capital cost of between $2 1/2 billion and $2 3/4 billion for the larger scale project. An updated capital cost estimate is being prepared as part of the Financing Study. The target date for the commencement of development remains the third quarter of 2011, with production targeted in the first half of 2014.

Escondida Copper Production Will Decline Up to 10% on Ore Grades, BHP Says


Copper production at Escondida, the world’s largest mine for the metal, will fall as much as 10 percenmanufacturers of nickel extraction equipments from orest by the middle of next year because of lower ore grades, said controlling owner BHP Billiton Ltd. Output will slide at least 5 percent in the current fiscal year through June 2011, the Melbourne-based company said today, maintaining last month’s forecast.


BHP owns a 57.5 percent stake in the Chilean mine. A scarcity of copper concentrate, the raw material for producing metal, will persist for “the foreseeable future,” Antofagasta Plc, which owns three Chilean mines, said yesterday. The shortfall forced smelters to lower processing fees charged to miners to ensure supply. Escondida produced 1.1 million metric tons of copper in total in 2009, down 12 percent on the year, according to figures on its website. That includes both concentrate and copper cathodes, or plates of finished metal.

Talvivaaara acquires additional stake in Talvivaara Sotkamo for €60 million


Talvivaara Mining announced today that it has signed an agreement with Outokumpu Mining Oy and its parent company Outokumpu Oyj to acquire agear system in grinding mill for analysisn additional 4% shareholding in Talvivaara Sotkamo Ltd, the primary operating subsidiary of Talvivaara.


As a result of this acquisition, Talvivaara's ownership in Talvivaara Sotkamo increases from 80% to 84% and Outokumpu Mining's ownership decreases to 16%. The acquisition price for the 4% stake is €60 million, and will be funded from Talvivaara's existing cash resources and available financing facilities. Simultaneously, Talvivaara has entered into an exclusive option agreement with Outokumpu Mining and Outokumpu Oyj whereby it will have the right, at its sole discretion, in one or more instalments, to acquire Outokumpu Mining's remaining 16% shareholding in Talvivaara Sotkamo for €240 million at any time prior to 31 March 2012.


Talvivaara has been informed that, in connection with this transaction, Solidium Oy has agreed to purchase Outokumpu Oyj's shareholding in Talvivaara representing 4.3% of all Talvivaara shares outstanding.


Pekka Perä, Talvivaara's CEO commented: "This transaction provides Talvivaara with improved access to the cash flows generated by Talvivaara Sotkamo through the increased ownership in the operating subsidiary. This is increasingly important as we continue our production ramp-up and consider further expansion in the future. Moreover, we are simplifying the corporate structure further. This is truly excellent news for Talvivaara shareholders. Outokumpu has been a valuable partner and a supportive shareholder in Talvivaara and Talvivaara Sotkamo since the inception of the company, and throughout its development into a producing mining operation."

South African Govt to overhaul mining laws


South Africa's mines milumwana copper mine zambianister Susan Shabangu on Tuesday said she would immediately review the country's mining and minerals legislation. This follows reports of growing investor concern over the country's mining regime following events that saw prospecting rights and rights over certain minerals awarded to third parties.


"I have noted with increasing concern the growing negative sentiment regarding South Africa's mining sector, specifically in relation to our regulatory framework," said Shabangu. "There is no doubt that clouds have been gathering over our country's mining reputation and I want to reassure all our stakeholders that South Africa is indeed a mining jurisdiction worthy of future investment," she said. The Department of Mineral Resources expects this process to take six months to complete. The minister said it had come to her attention that the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) contained a number of ambiguities that needed to be clarified...

Continental beats monthly coal target


Shares in Continental Coal Ltd lifted after the South Africa-focused coal miner said it had eclipsed its monthlygrinding mill sold in zimbabwe prices production target for July. Continental shares were up 0.2 cents, or 3.23 per cent, at 6.4 cents at 1234 AEST. The Perth-based miner said it produced 101,899 tonnes of thermal coal during July at its Vlakvarkfontein coal mine, 100km east of Johannesburg, exceeding its 100,000 tonne monthly target.


"We are confident that sustained monthly coal production levels of 100,000 tonnes can be achieved in the December 2010 quarter and beyond," chief executive Don Turvey said in a statement on Tuesday. Since the company commenced production in May, it has inked three short term off-take contracts but said on Tuesday that it expected longer term contracts would be entered into in coming months. "With these preliminary off-take contracts already established, the company is well positioned to ensure 100 per cent of our forecast production at Vlakvarkfontein is sold into the domestic market at attractive coal prices which provide free cashflow to support our other mine development activities," Mr Turvey said.

Conway Resources starts exploring the Belleterre Mine property


Conway Resources is pleased to announce the start of exploration work on the 72 geophysical targets covering 100% of the Belleterre Mine property, with the Corporation adused underground mining trucks for saleding eight new targets to the 64 targets identified earlier. The work will begin on May 30, and will be carried out by a team of geologists over a period of about four months. The goal is to identify the best drill targets in preparation for the next drilling program, scheduled for the fall of 2011.
