NUM says Northam workers to end strike
South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Monday mining process of phosphate mining in south africastriking workers at Northam Platinum are expected to return to work on Tuesday following a revised pay rise offer from the company.
"We have agreed with the members to call off the strike now. We are working on an agreement which will be finalised later today," NUM's chief negotiator at Northam, Zwelitsha Tantsi, told Reuters. He declined to give details of the revised offer until the agreement has been signed. NUM was demanding a 15 percent increase and a monthly housing allowance of 3,500 rand. The workers had earlier rejected the Northam's offer of a 9.5 percent rise and a housing allowance of 1,750 rand a month.
