Fortescue Metals Group in talks over $3.6b Solomon iron ore contract

The WA iron ore miner was today responding to a report today that it had awarded a $5 billion mining contract to Leighton Holdings. Both companies denied that a contract had been awarded, however Leighton did confirm that it was in negotiations with Fortescue. Fortescue confirmed it was in “discussions with shortlisted suppliers” for the Solomon project. “Whilst the company fully intends to award a mining services contract, it is also progressing an owner operator alternative in the event that a satisfactory agreement is unable to be negotiated,” Fortescue said. The miner added that it planned to make a decision on the contract in the coming weeks, with the contract valued at $3.6 billion over five years.
