Unions declare a dispute in gold mining sector wage negotiations

Although the parties made progress on some of the demands, a number of demands remained outstanding.
AngloGold Ashanti and Gold Fields offered to increase wages to 5.5% for the lowest paid employees and 5% for all other employees. Harmony and Rand Uranium offered a differentiated increase of 5.3% for the lowest paid employees and 4.8% for all other employees. This was followed by a declaration of a dispute by the unions. Dr Elize Strydom, who is negotiating on behalf of the gold mining companies, said she was still hopeful that the parties would reach agreement under a facilitated process. “The way forward from here is that the unions will approach the CCMA to appoint a facilitator.
